Epson 7900,9900,4900 clogged ink jet head

With the Epson sp7900, sp9900, sp4900 pro graphics ink jet printers now reaching up to 3 years or more in age, we are starting to see the effects of use and lack of preventative maintenance resulting in clogged ink jet heads.  Of course, at this stage, the printer is past the allowable 3 years of on site service from Epson.

I have had the opportunity to visit with over 5 of our Authorized Epson Service Centers in CO, NM & AZ over the last year and this issue is starting to become more of a challenge for Epson Pro Graphics printer owners.  We also have our own techs looking into this and finding that altitude, low humidity, poor housekeeping, lack of use and general neglect are the main factors in failure of the ink jet nozzles in the Epson TFP heads.  Quite often, everyone is looking at the head area to solve this issue, when actually the capping station is the first place they should be looking!

I have posted some photos of the 4900 and 7900 capping stations, head and damper/selector assembly on this article for reference.  On the 4900 station, you can see the place to the left with the cris-cross is where the ink gets purged and goes into the maintenance tank as part of the routine printer operations. This area should be cleaned about once or twice per year to remove paper lint, dust and debris.

In the middle of the 4900 capping is the key single unit that does the print head cleaning and the wiper blade is above that.  This is where most of the head cleaning work is done.  That is the area that needs the most clean up and must align to fit the head and provide a bit of suction to pull inks thru on a cleaning (pairs) . Generally, this area should be cleaned about once or twice per year, also.  The 7900 has tubes on each capping.

If this cleaning station is not doing its job, then everything goes down hill from there!

The area to the right that has 5 sets of cups is where the print head rests during its normal state and these cups should seal the head.  If they don’t seal the head, then we have problems, as the heads can dry out.  Although they don’t hold liquid, you can put a bit of the cleaning solution on each of those, turn the printer off and let it work its magic over night.  On the 7900, each cup is a cleaning station, so clean away!

All in all, if these 3 areas are kept maintained, cleaned, and free of any debris, the printer will function well.  It is also suggested that the printer be used on a frequent basis (once a week ) and kept humid if at all possible.  The 4900 is more intricate in working on, as the 7900 series is accessible by removing the right hand side cover.

These all function together in this unit.  The last item that is a factor in the capping station assembly is the selector, which is the solenoid that switches the set of lines that use matte black and photo black paired with the light black.  During cleaning or testing, this is why the light black goes down a bit more on testing and also on the start up initial fill.  We have seen failure of the selector portion and you can test that by changing from matte black to photo black and looking at the nozzle check.  It also will throw out an error code in most cases.  This is how epson does 11 colors and 10 jets!

Certainly, the capping station assembly in the 900 series for the 7900-9900, the 7890-9890 and any 4900 would be the best place to start when diagnosing clogged ink jet heads, ink starvation or any print quality issues.  Replacing that unit is far less expensive than the actual print head which has gotten extremely expensive.

Epson launches SureColor SC-F series of dye sublimation printers.
 New 44 and 64-inch models mark Epson’s entry into textile printing

Long Beach ISS Show will announce the following January 18-19-20 2013; previous Epson announcement on 14 November 2012– Today Epson enters the dye sublimation printing market for the first time with the announcement of two roll-fed dye sublimation printers: the 44-inch SureColor SC-F6000 and the 64-inch SureColor SC-F7000.

Providing high quality output at up to 720 x 1440dpi on all leading transfer papers, the new printers are not only the first dye sublimation models from Epson, but also the first in this sector in which every component, from ink and print head, to printer chassis and optional accessories, are all designed and manufactured by one company. This ensures that quality, performance and reliability are all optimized for maximum productive uptime and profit, and a low Total Cost of Ownership.

The SureColor SC-F models are durable and robust roll-fed CMYK printers that support an extensive range of applications. The mid-high volume 64-inch SureColor SC-F7000 and low-medium volume 44-inch SureColor SC-F6000 have been developed for the efficient production of quality soft signage, sportswear, apparel, accessories, customised promotional items and decorated gadgets. Innovative single-operator media loading and set-up features, such as automatic media tensioning and an intuitive LCD control panel, make both printers easy and quick to set up and use.

Both models output at speeds from 16 to 57m2/hr, depending upon application[1], and feature an integral and easily refillable, high-capacity 1.5 litre ink system. Textile print produced by the SureColor SC-F series printers also exhibits excellent light- and wash-fastness, as well as resistance to abrasion and perspiration.

Epson SureColor Solvent Printer is a Hit!

Epson SureColor S30670, S50670, & S70670 Solvent Printers set new goals for the solvent printer competition in speed, resolution and media handling. Epson has started shipping the new SureColor S-Series solvent printers and the customers are quite pleased with the change of features from the old GS 6000 made on the Mutoh chassis to the New Epson SureColor platform.  Significantly, they have beefed up the media handling system in the base unit with a media lift and compensating feed / take up that is second to none.
