Benefits of Using High Quality Monitors

Some of the Benefits of Using a Calibrated High Resolution Color LCD Monitor

*Accurate Color, The First Time !
*Client Satisfaction, no quality issues!
*Less Wasted Time, Resources = Money Saved!
*Less  Eye Fatigue & Work Stress with good monitors!
*Management achieves their Quality Objectives!
*You are now meeting industry standards!

There is a lot discussion amongst various digital imagers about print quality, color management and digital workflow for photography, pre-press and wide format digital printing.
At the crux of all this, is how we see or perceive color with our human eyes and how we choose to view images on our color  LCD monitors.

In discussing this issue with many professionals in the photo, graphic design, pre-press, printing and scientific community, one resounding theme started to be common with each person I spoke with;
“The better the quality of your color LCD monitor, the better the quality of your work will prevail, as you truly get what you pay for in these LCD monitors”

We have all seen it in every workplace, aging color LCD monitors, inexpensive common brands give poor results and continue to fatigue the users eyes every day in the work environment.
It is amazing what management will mandate and what workers will tolerate.  The end result is often predictable…poor color, wasted resources, lost time and eye sore technicians wondering why they feel uncomfortable spending 6-8 hours in front of a deficient color LCD monitor doing what is supposed to be “ professional quality color workflow”

On the other side of the issue, I have been able to work with departments and professionals that have taken a very educated approach and actually sought out the very best color LCD monitors for their staff.  The results are amazing!  The workplace had appropriate lighting in place for viewing and performing color critical matching.  The workers stress levels were lower, with little eye fatigue and more accurate color consistency.  Waste due to inaccurate color or re-printing went way down.  Clients were shown accurate color , thus reducing any complaints or discourse on color matching.  Amazingly, the aspect of spending a little more on a quality color LCD monitor became a viable return on managements investment, as the benefits out weighed any cost issue.  Instead of these monitors costing the company money, management came back to me with the comment that the monitors actually were saving money and other valuable resources (people !)

Imagine, happy clients with accurate printing, content digital imagers with less stress, management with less to worry about and everyone gets accurate color!

Over the next few weeks, we will go over some of the featured products that have risen to the top of the color quality standards, such as Eizo, NEC, Samsung, Sony & others.  We will go over graphics, professional and even delve into scientific monitors to get you a short cut to picking out great tools that will help with your workflow.

One of the benefits of working with over 25 of our recognized industry experts, we typically will cut through the learning curve and get you the digital imaging products that are proven to work in the actual real world.  We call that “ Value-added” services!  Of course, we want you to get educated, so we are including several web sites and references, so you can read about the science behind the products that we recommend.

One of the best documents that we have found recently is located on Eizo’s web site at http://www.eizo.com/global/ posted in their news on April 26th is the “ upload of Color Management Handbook Volume 2 ( PDF: 5,858 KB ) and totally worth the download and reading.  Their entire site is full of great support on high resolution color lcd monitors and hardware versus software calibration.  Contact us at 303-934-2777 for more information, pricing and to order.

Another great resource, although hard to find enough technical support is the NEC site at    http://www.necdisplay.com/category/desktop-monitors you will need to dig further to find technical details, but NEC has a great product at a great price!  We have more information, just contact us with the model you are interested in.  As we do a lot of workshops & seminars, we often have special deals during or after on our fresh or open box demos (hint; buy right )

Here are a list of the monitors that our various users have selected to buy recently;

EIZO ColorEdge series;
Eizo CG303W-BK
Eizo CG275W-BK
Eizo CG243W-BK
Eizo CG223W-BK

EIZO FlexScan series;
SX3031W-BK
SX2762W-BK
SX2462W-BK
SX2262W-BK

NEC Professional Displays
PA301W-BK
PA271W-BK
PA241W-BK
P221W-BK

Of course, the most popular monitor calibration tool is the X-Rite Eye 1 Display Pro and that is a must for any serious professional user that would like to have consistent color lcd monitors that are calibrated to industry standards.  To read more about the X-Rite line of devices, you can visit our web site at   http://www.digital2you.cc/X-Rite/ or go to    www.X-Rite.com as they have a great site with all sorts of details, support and on line tutorials & webinars.  All of our seminar notes and pdf’s are located on our site in our Seminars and Classrooms section for easy downloads at http://www.digital2you.cc/seminars-classroom.html

Coming soon, more articles / blog postings on Eizo, Nec & others!  If you are interested in learning more about how to achieve accurate color in your digital workflow, please contact us and we will be able to assist at 303- 934-2777!  Be sure to ask us about bundling the Epson Instant Rebates with  Pro Graphics Printers, NEC & Eizo monitors and X-Rite calibrators. Jay Kinghorn
Newsflash: Lightroom Mastery Weekend Workshop with Jay Kinghorn is being held in Denver!

We have decided that we must dedicate this blog to the reality of two things: that Lightroom 4 is out and amazing, plus, there is an awesome opportunity to work closely, in a small group, for an entire weekend with Adobe Lightroom Wizard, Jay Kinghorn… in May! Here, you will get to learn through the eyes of an expert how to work with the new and very distinguished, Lightroom 4.

Because there is limited space, we especially don’t want you, our favorite customers, to miss out on this opportunity. Click here to watch a short video by Jay about the workshop and read on…

When and Where:
Jay Kinghorn’s Lightroom Mastery Weekend Workshops

Denver • May 19/20, 2012
Andrew Clark’s studio at 1481 South Gaylord Street in Denver

The class is limited to 15 people. Pre-registration is required and Digital2you can help you with a discount. (wink, wink… keep reading)

Some Information About Lightroom 4
Lightroom 4, a powerful photo management tool, helps you transform your photos and dSLR videos from a devilish jumble into a manageable utopia of visual media.
The new release of Lightroom 4, download here, incorporates several new features like Maps for image organization and Books for publishing your photos. There is more though… Lightroom 4 includes several major changes to the structure and function of even the most basic image corrections, making everything much easier, friendlier and more efficient to work with. Yay!

Just so you know, Adobe has teamed up with Blurb, whose book templates are now embedded in the new Lightroom. You can design, edit and then submit your book directly to Blurb for printing from Lightroom 4! You even have access to price quotes and all the custom book options you could wish for. I am personally excited about this, especially because of the all the added steps that are necessary to download templates, save correctly and figure out pricing by going directly to Blurb’s website and working in InDesign. This makes life so much easier. It also means that I, speaking for myself, may never leave my apartment, once I have this program set up and ready to go. Don’t let me misguide you though, the workshop we are talking about will not necessarily be focused on book making. If you are a professional, an instructor, or looking at creating ways to work more efficiently… This is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.

More about the Workshop

On May 19th and 20th, you will get to spend an information-packed, fun and enlightening weekend with author, expert trainer and Olympus Visionary photographer Jay Kinghorn and return home with a creative, efficient, flexible digital photography workflow that saves time while ensuring your photos are protected with an effective backup strategy.

There is Much to Learn
Gain a deeper understanding of this robust program to help you devise creative solutions to many of your photography needs in Lightroom, by:
• Using DNG profiles to minimize repetitive corrections
• Creating presets to streamline your workflow from ingest to print
• Learning techniques for reliably preparing photos for print and the Web
• Learning techniques within Photoshop to extend the power of your workflow
• Utilizing Lightroom 4’s new features to improve image quality

Psst… Workshop admission is only $297. (Digital2You customers receive $40 off at checkout using the coupon code “d2u”. Aren’t you glad we are letting you know about this?!)

Learn more about these weekend workshops and register here.

You can also check out Jay’s visual blog and follow him on Twitter @jaykinghorn

Added Bonus!  Dennis Halley will be providing the new X-Rite Eye One Display Pro for color management at Jay’s workshop, along with the Eizo Coloredge CG243W-BK High Resolution Color Monitor, Epson Pro Graphics Printers & more!  We also will have on hand the Epson Signature Worthy Fine Art Papers & be available to assist with any of the new products from our website  www.digital2you.cc

And Another Bonus! This workshop will be held at the recently and fabulously renovated studio of Andrew Clark Photography, amazing portrait and wedding photography. The studio is located at 1481 S Gaylord St in Denver. Learn more about Andrew and follow him on Facebook here.

Save an Epson Maintenance Tank Today and Everyone Wins!

Cleaned Epson Maintenance Tank ready to be refurbished.

Maintenance tanks… The ever important clean-up cartridge in your printer to capture all the wasted ink from cleaning and ink changes. (It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it.) These handy tanks need to be changed and your printer will certainly let you know when you have to do this, by stopping you in your printing tracks! So, what do we do with these tanks, once they are full? It may not seem like a huge number, but the reality is that the majority of these end up in the landfill, with ink cartridges, in startling numbers (try 350 million/year in America alone). This is not all though, what is also going into the landfill is your $$, and a lot of it! Read more to learn about the cost and value saving option of using refurbished tanks. Everyone wins with this option, especially you!

What is the deal? What do YOU save by refurbishing Maintenance Tanks?

Reason #1. Money: the most influential motivator

Let’s talk about the nitty gritty of saving money. First, for those of you shopping in the printing retail world, you will buy a brand new maintenance tank for $39. What if you are a school and have ten printers? The total cost is now $390. However, when you send in a tank to be refurbished through Digital2you, you actually only pay $24.95 for this service and there is no shipping charge involved. For ten printers, the cost is now only $249.50. I personally would love an extra $140.50 to spend on some other useful item… coffee. I mean, paper! Wouldn’t you? But, we aren’t done yet… You can do this up to twenty times per maintenance tank, which will dramatically increase your savings to $2,810. Hello. How can we argue with this?

But… That is not the only opportunity to save $! (What?! More?!) New customers: you can buy a $30 maintenance tank on our website. For everyone, including new customers, we have a deal for you too! You can buy 6 refurbished tanks for only $99.95! The numbers are starting to look even better, aren’t they?

Reason #2. The Environment!

The landfill sent me a special memo last week, concerned about how so many maintenance tanks were being sent there, when they have all this available life left in them! The landfill can’t use them for anything productive, and while it willingly takes, without complaint, all of our garbage, because that is it’s job… This time, the request has come in: “Why don’t you re-think this? I am getting pretty full here. You can re-use this up to 20 times and save money in the process.”

Who knew?! Everyone can win?! Plus, you win the most!

Here are the facts about the plastics we through away from printer use, in case emotional appeal doesn’t work for you:

● As we said, In North America alone, over 350 million cartridges and maintenance tanks are sent to landfills and this number keeps increasing every year.

● It takes 2.5 ounces of oil to produce just one small format inkjet cartridge and up to 1/2 gallon to produce a large format cartridge.

● Plastics used in printer cartridges can take over 1000 years to decompose. (Possibly more… as we haven’t had plastics long enough to know.)

This reminds me… You can recycle Ink Cartridges too! Please save them or send them in. These cannot be refurbished at this point, but you will be making many beings happy! Click here, to sign up for our free recycling program!

We must always remember that our actions impact our environment and we are reliant on her for our survival… let’s do everything we can to make sure she stays happy and the landfill is only used for what is absolutely necessary.

So, how do we refurbish tanks? EASY as 1, 2, 3…

1. Purchase our service from our web store at www.digital2you.cc .

2. Receive your invoice order number via email.

3. Print and follow the instructions on how to remove the ink pads and ship to the address on the flyer. Send your empty tank to us in the original box and bag with invoice order number. (REMEMBER to hold on to the original box and bag!)

What happens next?

Upon receiving your order, we will reprogram your tank, insert a new filler and return it to you to use again. You will not be parted for long and your happy, long term relationship with your maintenance tank will continue for many more moons. Now I feel better… Don’t you?

If you have any questions please call us.   303-934-2777

Equipment, Preventative Maintenance and Service… Oh My!

Staying ahead of the game is probably the most important thing you can do in regards to caring for your printer. This is exactly why we are here, to help you to understand what you need to know about taking care of your printer and what to do when something goes wrong.

Preventative Maintenance Programs and Products
In addition to down time services, warranty and repairs, we suggest that you consider the preventative maintenance procedures and programs that we offer. Quite often, just keeping the printers clean and performing certain preventative maintenance cleanings will keep your printer in tip-top condition and performing well. (Happy Printer!)

Tip #1: Online Documents (Visit this section here)
We offer several service related suggestions, tips & tricks, and cleaning solutions on our service department section, including these:

Extend Your Epson Printer Life!
Epson 4000 Cleaning Procedure Sheet
Epson 7600-9600 Cleaning Procedure Sheet

SIDENOTE: Are you curious how Epson Printers have evolved? Check out our handy Epson History Chart of Printers.

Tip #2: Schedule a Check-up With a Technician

Check the Paper Transport Area: One of the best discoveries that we have learned about is when a printer gets to be about 3 years old, it really needs to have the paper transport area looked at carefully by a technician , cleaned, lubed and inspected for wear and any needed parts replacement. We have some suggestions posted on our site for this.

Use The Cost Effective Pink Cleaning Solution: In addition, we offer a user installed “Pink Cleaning” solution that can effectively clean out the ink lines, dampers and heads from accumulated pigments and inks. By doing this, your printers missing nozzles are cleaned out and the system is good for another 6-9 months. We suggest leaving the solution in your printer for 72 hours or more to get the full benefit of this cleaning process. Our cleaning kits cost about $395 for a set of the 8 cartridges that have 220 ml each. Thus , you can get about 4 cleaning or more out of a set and your cleaning cost is about $ 90 per cleaning! (Oh My!) What a great way to assure that your printer stays operating in good condition. Sometimes, we encounter printers that have been neglected and not used for periods of time that need this cleaning done to recover the proper operation of the printer. You can burn through a lot of ink trying head cleaning from the front panel and waste a lot of ink & time doing this. Contact us for more information, visit our service corner, view our blog to get more insight and details on this great method of cleaning. (Hint: We also have a write-up on Pink Cleaning Solution in our Classrooms area)

Keep your printer area humidity between 35-45% if you can. Altitude and dry areas are prone to ink starvation and nozzle clogging.  Contact one of our reps to discuss this important issue and find some solutions that are simple and easy to perform!

Tip #3: Resources For Down Time and After Warranty Repair Services

What To Do When the Going… Stops
When your printer goes down and you are past any manufacturer warranty, you basically have several options:

- Struggle with repairs on your own. (Finding parts, knowing what to do and the time involved is complicated.)

- Call the OEM equipment service, dispatch and repair on site. (Generally, the most costly option, but very good response & results.)

- Call in an unknown service organization to perform the repairs (Effective, but they may not know your specific needs and operation.)

- Take your printer to a Factory Authorized Service Center. (This requires that YOU bring in the printer, which is not a great option when you have a big printer.)

Or… The Best Option: contact Digital2You so that we can dispatch a qualified technician that is familiar with your equipment, can perform the service on site, and will interface with your total printing needs to see that everything is coordinated to work best for your needs, thus getting your printing and quality up to speed as expected! (Yay! Winner!)  Call us at (303) 934-2777 for assistance.

By the way, did you know that we not only service Epson printers, but we also service Canon, HP, Xerox, Laserjet printers and copiers? We have 8 service technicians alone in Colorado, available between Colorado Springs and Fort Collins, and More in New Mexico and Arizona! This means, we have a lot of qualified experience at our fingertips and that if you have an issue with a printer you think we may not know, guess again! We will let you know if we cannot service your printer, hence it is always best to ask before wrestling with the problem on your own. The best number to call is: (303) 934-2777.

Due to the popularity of Epson’s new Signature Worthy® line of Exhibition Canvas, Epson has received requests for recommendations on how to properly print, top coat, gallery wrap, and display a finished canvas inkjet print. Unlike traditional photographic prints, canvas fine art requires certain techniques that differentiate this medium and add to the beauty of the finished product.
